Job Details

Performs full range of Journeyman level structural welding, fitting, and fabrication. Welder/Mechanical Fitters use a range of tools and engineering techniques to maintain and repair mechanical plant machinery and equipment to operational standards.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Maintains 5’s standards in the maintenance workshop and in all areas where assigned tasks.
  • Expected to contribute and maintain conditions that will ensure a safe & healthy working environment. Demonstrates commitment to safety, health, & the environment by following the policies and procedures of JGC.
  • Reads and interprets blueprints and machine drawings in doing structural or major mechanical repair work &/or to determine specific welding requirements.
  • Operates oxyacetylene and electric arc welding machines in cutting and welding structural steel beams, columns, plates, flooring, brackets, etc.
  • Cuts, welds, brazes and solders metal parts in the repair and replacement of parts for mechanical equipment, or in the repair, replacement or installation of structural steel.
  • Aligns, sets in place and welds bases for motors, pumps and other mechanical equipment.
  • Fashion sheet metal troughs, chutes, ducts and other devices, as well as the structures necessary to support them.
  • Fabricates wall brackets, shelves, supports, ladder, platforms, stairways, railings, etc.
  • Uses hand tools and power shop tools to set up and adjust plant machines & equipment during planned or emergency maintenance activities.
  • Identifies defective or worn mechanical components or equipment, then repairs/replaces worn/faulty components or equipment.
  • Assists in the installation of new machinery and equipment.
  • Completes Job Order and Food Safety documentation.

Academic/Technical/Management: Experience and Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent and 6 years’ experience in an operating chemical, power, processing, or manufacturing plant in one or more of the following crafts: pipe fitter, welder, millwright, plant mechanic;
  • Or completion of formal apprenticeship or similar accredited training program (such as vocational, trade, commercial, or military) in the mechanical field or journeyman certification and 4 years’ industrial mechanical maintenance experience in an operating chemical, power, processing, or manufacturing plant in one or more of the following crafts: pipe fitter, welder, millwright, plant mechanic.
  • Proficient with manual or semi-automatic welding equipment such as shielded metal arc welding (stick welding), oxy/acetylene cutting & welding,
  • Proficiency in flux-cored arc welding (FCAW), gas metal arc welding (MIG), gas tungsten arc welding (TIG), plasma arc welding would be an asset.
